Alabama Shakespeare Festival Education Programs

For over twenty years, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival SchoolFest program has been delighting students and teachers alike by presenting special weekday matinee performances for schools. Our productions will engage your students, bringing great classics to life through the magic of theatre, and provide you with the opportunity to develop cross-curricular study or activities in literature, history, geography, science, art, and music. The ASF Education Department is on hand to enhance and enrich your curriculum with related language arts exercises and instructional material available on-line, special teacher workshops and tours of our facility.

Charlotte's Web

In the tradition of Winnie the Pooh and James and the Giant Peach, ASF continues with a delightful staging of E.B. White’s classic tale of a spider who becomes the best friend a little pig ever had—and whose good deeds are returned in the most inspiring ways. Grades 1 - 5.

A Christmas Carol: The Musical

A Christmas Carol: The Musical is a spectacular musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless tale. Miserly old Mr. Scrooge finds the meaning of Christmas with the help of Tiny Tim and a few other-worldly experiences. A Christmas Carol: The Musical features a score by composing giants Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime: The Musical, Seussical the Musical) and Alan Menken (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast). Recommended for all grades.

Bear Country

What if you had the opportunity to get up close and personal with legendary University of Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant? In ASF’s production of Bear Country—you can. Sit in the stands and absorb the wit, wisdom and life journey of a man who became an Alabama icon and the national standard by which college football coaches are judged. Grades 9 - 12.

Comedy of Errors

The Bard is at his playful best in this fun and farcical romp. The story centers on the arrival of Antipholus and Dromio of Syracuse in the town of their twin brothers Antipolus and Dromio of Ephesus. Mistaken identities result in hilarious mishaps and mayhem! Grades 7 - 12

Othello

Don’t miss this Shakespearean classic! The beautiful Desdemona defies society and marries Othello, a Moorish general, and chooses to follow him to Cyprus where her husband must repulse the invading Turks. But the villainous Iago, a junior officer in Othello’s army, sets out to destroy the lives of the couple for his own selfish gains. Grades 9 - 12.

The Furniture of Home

But outside forces threaten to hinder the journey that takes them from losing everything to finding the meaning of home. Contains adult language and situations.

The Three Musketeers

The Count of Monte Cristo was one of the major hits of ASF’s 2007-08 season—Charles Morey’s adaptation of Dumas’ The Three Musketeers promises to be as exciting. It’s all for one and one for all as D’Artagnan, Athos, Aramis and Porthos cross swords with the evil Cardinal Richelieu and the enemies of France. In addition to being a rip-roaring tale, this production features costumes and a set that have to be seen to be believed.
Grades 7 - 12.

How to Register for an ALFA SchoolFest Performance

Registration Instructions

Fill out an ALFA Schoolfest Application completely, providing all contact information. All requests are processed in the order in which they are received. The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is not responsible for illegible faxes, registrations that are detained, or correspondences lost in the mail.

Registrations will NOT be accepted by telephone.

Payment Instruction

A Purchase order (PO) is required at the time of registration for all performances. For reservations made after October 15th a 10% deposit is required within 6 weeks of placing the reservation. Full payment is due 3 weeks before the confirmed date.

Please note: A purchase order is a legally binding document. Upon receipt of a purchase order, the Alabama Shakespeare Festival will issue an invoice to the contact person. Please remit payment with a copy of the invoice. Registrations not paid may be canceled, if for any reason you need an extension, please keep us informed, we want you to be able to expose your students to our facilities.

Confirmation of Registration

A confirmation invoice will be sent to the contact person listed on the registration form. All invoices and teacher packets will be sent to the contact person who is responsible for forwarding invoices to school finance offices and distributing information to other teachers and chaperones in the group.

Cancellation Policy

In the event schools/teachers must cancel or reduce the group size, teachers may request in writing for a full or partial refund, no later than four weeks (20 working days) prior to the confirmed date. If a written cancellation is not received, you will be responsible for full payment, even if the seats go unused on the day of the event. Please allow 3 weeks for refunds to be processed. If there is a reduction in seats or cancellations within four weeks we will attempt to re-sell the seat(s) and refund the amount we are able to re-sell. However, we are unable to make any guarantees, and can only offer a refund for the number seats sold. You will be held responsible for the cost of any remaining seats.
